Country: South Africa
Province: Western Cape
Population: ~8 436
Unemployment: ~40%
Sir Lowry’s Pass village is a small community in the Western Cape that is largely forgotten.
The people here struggle with many of the same issues found in other South African townships: a lack of education, alcoholism, and HIV/AIDS, contribute to the very high unemployment rates.
Employment is mostly seasonal farm labour, leaving many without work for large portions of the year.
Whether mothers are working or not, the lack of experienced parenting means children are largely unsupervised and ill-equipped to deal with peer pressure.
Issues like drug and alcohol abuse, gang membership, crime, and teenage pregnancy are widespread. The academic results are poor and the future appears bleak.
